Lately, the Non-Governmental DONXA Organization (Belgium) has cooperated with schools to upgrade current school libraries to new ones which are filled with a great number of books, adequate basic equipments for reading and doing research of students and teachers with the hope of bringing long-term benefit for many people. This is a project of high practical significance, suitable for the need of school as well as the common goal of Vietnam Education.
This project started at Soc Son Disabled Children Nursing and Training School. This is the school for deaf -dumb and intellectual disabled children from 6 to 20 years old. Founded 10 years ago, it has been paid great attention by many government organs. However, the library system was still very poor. In February, 2009, after paying a first visit to the school, DONXA understood the real situation here. From expectations of all teaching staffs and children together with DONXA support, the library-upgrading project was conducted. At first, the school had a reading room already but in bad and poorly-equipped quality. After seeing the fact, DONXA decided to renew the room, repainted walls and facilitated the library with lighting system and necessary equipments such as bookcases, book shelves, computers, etc. On 30th July, 2009, DONXA library project was inaugurated, as planned, to welcome the start of new school year 2009-2010. This is a project with high practicality and sustainability and receives high appreciation from teachers and parents.
Old school library in Soc Son Nursing and Training School
The new library brings lots of happiness to teachers and students. Especially, students are extremely blissful. With the new library, they are eager to gain knowledge which is quite difficult for them under other circumstances because of their disability. Based on the specific characteristics of students, the school established the library timetable according to the study schedule. Each class can use the library at least twice 2 hours a week. With the help of teachers, children can read books, listen to teachers telling stories, draw pictures, and watch films and have access to the Internet to search for information related to lessons. Weekly, Students are excited to go to the library according to school’s schedule.
Students reading books in new library
The other outstanding thing is that, not only students but also teachers can benefit greatly from this project. School board and all teachers have daily access to specialized books and documents which help improve teaching and studying quality. The library has a great number of books, especially the specialized books of teaching methodology for disabled students. Also, teachers’ professional skills are enhanced by the effective information resources. Particularly, teaching quality in the school year 2009-2010 has been improved considerably. Thanks to computer system, teachers could approach and exploit numerous information which helps serve teaching and studying work. Those are very useful information as the matter of fact that there are not many schools for disabled children. Moreover, they are also far away from each other. That prevents teachers from exchanging and sharing ideas directly about the teaching methods for these special students. Ms. Le Thu Huong, a teacher from Soc Son Nursing and Training School happily shared with us: “After the school library project was conducted, teaching staffs have more opportunities to study, widen and exchange knowledge, especially about the teaching method for disable children who need the suitable methodology because they are different from normal children. We can also learn how to help them join and get used to the normal life as well as share advices with others colleagues who also teach disable students. Moreover, we can also get help from teachers in other countries via Internet computers.”
As seeing us passing by, some students gathered around me curiously. I asked one of them: “You’ve had a brand new library in your school. Do you often go to the library?” then he replied “I go to the library once a week for an extracurricular class according to our school schedule. Besides, during break time, I come here to read books.” More question: “What can you learn when you come to the library?” –answer: “The thing I like best in the library is that we can read lots of books, newspapers, watch TV and broaden our knowledge about my study as well as the life outside. That help me much to be more confident when communicating with people and joining the normal life. Thanks to that, my study also can gain some progress. I can read lots of beautiful text and know how to do accurately with math. I wish to have more and more interesting reading sources for all of us so that all unlucky students like us can enjoy books-that is the thing we could not dare to dream before.”
From the school library project sample which was conducted in Soc Son Nursing and Training School for Disabled Children up till now DONXA has built two more school library systems in Dan Phuong District in Hanoi. They are in Tho An Secondary School and Trung Chau B Primary School. DONXA especially wants to thank the warm-hearted help from sponsors which made these projects possible.
We especially want to thank D&B (www.dnb.com) for sponsoring the project in Soc Son and Tho An,
and all the children of the schools GLS ‘t Blokje van Loenhout, and GLS De Wissel van Wuustwezel in Belgium who raised money to sponsor the library project in Trung Chau B primary school.
