“Educational Answers to the Diverse Needs of all Children”

Introduction

We are very pleased to announce this Short Training Initiative (STI) on Professional Development in Special Educational Needs, organised by the Artevelde University College Ghent (Belgium), in cooperation with VLIR-UOS (University Development Cooperation) and DONXA vzw (Vietnam). This STI fits in our vision on strategic alliances and therefore aims to result in a broader and more in-depth cooperation between institutions.

Content & Aims

Teachers and teachers trainers will be offered opportunities for professionalization in meeting the diverse needs of all children, specifically of the most vulnerable amongst them.

The focus of this training is on Adaptive Learning Support, Individual Education Planning, Needs Based Assessment, Co-operation with Families, Interdisciplinary Team Cooperation and Internal/External Support. Participants will be supported in the realisation of a personal development plan for special needs education in his/her local context.

Day 1

Introduction into the framework of Education for All, Adaptive Learning Support and Inclusive Education

Day 2

Seminar on Needs based assessment: Introduction and exchange about the tools of Needs Based Assessment with experts from a pupil guidance centre

Day 3

Introduction into Individual Education Planning: Focus on process and outcome

Workshops on Individual Education Planning by teachers/students of the advanced Bachelor in Special Education

Day 4

Visits to schools and services for special education (part 1)

Discussion about Education for all and Adaptive learning support

Tutor time: Personal development plan (integration and reflection)

Day 5

Seminar: Cooperation with Families, Empowerment of Parents of children with Special Educational Needs

Interview and discussion with parent advocates about their experiences

Day 6

Workshop: Development of Interdisciplinary Cooperation with early intervention, therapists, guidance and resource centers, ...

Visits to schools and services for special education (part 2)

Day 7

Seminar: Teaching for diversity: How to adapt teaching to the needs arising from specific disabilities/disorders (casework)

Workshop on Internal team support

Day 8

Internal Team support: case work

Tutor time: Personal development plan (integration and reflection)

Day 9

Poster presentations: Presentation of a Personal development plan

Formal program evaluation

Continuous

Development of a personal development plan for Special Needs Education, to be presented at the end of the 2 weeks and to be reported on in an assignment

The programme is built upon the following objectives:

In this course participants will:

-          gain a clear insight in Adaptive Learning Support for all children with special educational needs

-          detect the concrete barriers that hinder and the resources that promote Education for All

-          obtain conceptual background on Needs Based Assessment and Individual Education Planning

-          develop diverse ways to adapt the learning context to children with special educational needs, e.g. with developmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, functional disabilities, ...

-        see how expertise on special needs can be developed in resource centers and how this expertise can be used to support teachers, children and parents in local schools

-          know how to promote Interdisciplinary Teamwork and know how to empower parents into participation

-        learn from different viewpoints, experiences and practices and use these as a frame of reference in reflecting on their own situation

-          develop an analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threads of special needs education in their own country as compared with other Countries, as a starting point for the training of teachers and other professionals in their own institution.

Evaluation

During the course, participants will develop a personal development plan for Special Needs Education in their own country in which they apply the theoretical and practical input of the training. Therefore, participants will write an assignment in which they report and reflect on their personal development plan. At the end of the two weeks training, participants will present their personal development plan.

Duration of the course

The course includes two weeks of intensive training in Belgium from Monday 19th until Thursday 29th of November 2012 (full attendance required).Estimated workload[1]: 90 hours (including preliminary task). Participants arrive on Sunday 18th November. Departure is on Friday 30th November 2012.

 

 

Scholarships

02 scholarships are available for DONXA candidates. Scholarships include participation to the course, study materials, return flight to Belgium, accommodation (18th November – 30th November), mealtimes and insurance.

Target Group

A candidate to take part in the Short Training Initiative (STI)  ‘Professional Development in Special Educational Needs’ belongs to either one of the following categories

A) A teacher, teaching assistant, therapist, headmaster or other professional in a pre-, primary or secondary school (mainstream or special school)

-          with experience in the support of children with special educational needs

-          seconded by the institute’s governing body for the working hours as indicated in the training concept before, during and after the STI

-          in order to improve his own educational practice and to actively influence the practice of teaching and learning of colleague lecturers

B) A lecturer or Head of Department in an Institute of Higher Education/Teacher Training, a   Continuing Professional Development (CPD) provider, a professional in an educational support institute/educational guidance service,...)

-          with experience in the support of children with special educational needs

-          seconded by the institute’s governing body for the working hours as indicated in the training concept before, during and after the STI

-          in order to improve his own educational practice and to actively influence the practice of teaching and learning of colleague lecturers/ in Higher Education / Teacher Training

Requirements

Furthermore, a candidate to take part in this course:

-          is fluent in English (speaking, listening, reading, writing).

-          is able to travel to Belgium in the period starting from November 18 until November 30 2012 (full attendance required!)

Intake procedure

Application is on the basis of invitation only (no open registration).

With this announcement, selected candidates need to submit:

  • motivation letter and CV of the candidate (in English)
  • copy of passport of the candidate

-          experience in the support of children with special educational needs

-          fluency in English
